The historic Medicare legislation which narrowly passed the House on Nov. 22 and the Senate on Nov. 25 was supposed to fulfill the pressing need, and the persistent campaign pledges, to add a prescription drug benefit to Medicare. Unhappy with Medicare Part D?

The pharmaceutical industry spent $800 million on federal lobbying and campaign contributions over the last seven years, according to a report released July 6, 2005, by the Center for Public Integrity. CPI reviewed more than 5,500 lobbying disclosure reports filed with the Senate Office of Public Records (Hallam, Bloomberg/Philadelphia Inquirer, 7/7/05). [read more]

Medicare 2011 Rates

Part A deductible= $1132
(was $1100)
Part B deductible= $162
(was $155)
Part B premium= $115.40
(was $96.40* or $110.50**)

*Most people earning a Social Security benefit in 2011 will continue to pay the 2009 rate of $96.40 per month (**or the 2010 rate of $110.50 per month, if you went on Medicare in 2010). Exceptions still include high-earning households & folks who do not have a Part B premium deducted from their Social Security benefit.
